Lincoln

A journey into a pivotal moment of history.

Rediscover the moment in time that launched the United States into a “new birth of freedom”. Then, revisit Lincoln’s past and family to explore what inspired him to write the Gettysburg Address.

History can be a chore to learn but a delight to revisit. The gamification of learning history in VR offers learners a means to revisit key moments in our past and experience them first-hand (or as close as possible from the comfort of their homes). We wanted to enhance the learning experience to make learning enjoyable and accessible for all.

Lincoln’s Gettysburg address stands out as one of the most pivotal moments in defining freedom for human beings. One can always watch a pre-rendered experience on the internet, but we believe that transporting the user to that time through VR will enhance the cognitive ability to remember key facts later on.

Project Goals

The Experience

The user is given context into the times surrounding the Gettysburg address. They are made to understand why the need to define a human being’s freedom was so crucial during the civil war. Once context is established, the user becomes an audience member to Lincoln’s Gettysburg address.

Following the address, the user can explore Lincoln’s temperamental relationship with his family and gain insight into the factors that shaped the man and the words he chose on that day.

A quiz at the end of the experience serves to gamify the process of retaining key facts from the Gettysburg Address. By taking the learners on an interactive journey through the past, rather than simply telling them about it, the scores in the quiz tend to be higher and memory retention enhanced since not only is it something that learnt about but it is something they actually experienced and have memories of their own about.
